Saturday — Lille within the walls

Morning. Start with the Grand'Place and Vieux-Lille, as in the one-day itinerary: cobbled lanes, rue de la Monnaie, place aux Oignons, a stop at Méert. In the morning the quarter is calm.

Lunch in an estaminet — welsh or carbonnade, the local register.

Afternoon. The Palais des Beaux-Arts, or a shopping stroll between rue Esquermoise and rue de Béthune if you're more in the mood for the shops.

Evening. Lille has a real nightlife, especially in Vieux-Lille. Dine in the city; if you'd rather not take the car again, the train from Armentières remains an evening option.

Sunday — Roubaix, Wazemmes and the markets

The Wazemmes market, on Sunday morning, is one of the largest and liveliest in the North. Part of it is held under a covered hall — fruit, spices, fish, cheese — in a lively, multicultural atmosphere. Arrive before 11am. It's a morning in its own right, and one of the finest ways into real Lille life.

In the afternoon, head for Roubaix and La Piscine: a former 1930s Art Deco swimming pool turned into a museum, where the works surround the central basin beneath the glass roof. The place itself leaves as strong an impression as the collections. Roubaix is about twenty minutes from Lille, reachable by metro.

The weekend from Maison La Vesée

Between the two days, the boutique residence is the point of rest: the south-facing pool in season, the spa, a whole apartment to yourself to come back to without a transition. And for those who want to extend, the region opens out beyond Lille — Flanders, the coast, Belgium are within driving distance for a third day.

Frequently asked questions

In practice.

What to see in Lille on a Sunday?

The Wazemmes market in the morning, La Piscine in Roubaix in the afternoon. It's the most representative Sunday programme in the metropolis. Note: some museums close on Monday or Tuesday, not on Sunday.

Do you need a car for the weekend?

Yes: the car is the most flexible way to move around the metropolis and reach the station. In the city, the metro and walking are enough once you're there. For Roubaix, the metro from Lille is direct.

Can you add a day outside Lille?

Yes. From Maison La Vesée, Flanders, the Opal Coast and Belgium are all reachable in a day. Enough to round out a long weekend.

Which weekend to avoid?

The weekend of the Braderie de Lille (early September) if your aim is to visit the city: the crowds are such that sightseeing becomes difficult. People come for the Braderie itself, not for anything else.
